Okay...Joe and I made it safely back from our trek across the country. Woohoo. Always happy to make it home in one piece...
Okay, so I will just try to catch up a little at a time on telling you the exploits of our vacation.
Friday, October 10th: Joe, Flat Stanley and I all left Los Angeles for Washington DC.
We stayed at the Residence Inn in Manassas, VA that night.
Saturday, October 11th: After breakfast we trekked all the way to Manassas National Battlefield Park...from our hotel we only had to make one turn, besides driveways...we were very close to it.
It was very interesting. This coming from the girl who would have failed history in high school had it not been for the fact that I was the teacher's aid in fourth period and in the class 6th period...after I graded all the test, etc. But I digress. They had this really neat electronic map that showed the troop movements from that battle...the first battle of the civil war.
From there we headed over to Front Royal, VA where the north entrance to Shennandoah National Park is...also the start of the Skyline Drive. It was very pretty. The leaves had started to change for fall. If you don't make any stops the whole 105 miles drive should take you about 3 hours due to the 35 mph speed limit. It took us 7 or so. Yep, you guess it...we stopped. Not only that, we detoured.
We left the drive at the west entrance to it to go to Luray, VA and the famous Luray Cavern. I happen to have a thing for caves. Not sure why but I go to them every chance I get. Virginia happens to have a lot of them, so Joe made me pick just one to go to. The cavern itself was nice, but since it was a Saturday it was so stinkin' crowded that we could not enjoy it the way I would have liked. The cave is at a temperature of 54 degrees year round...that is of course unless they have groups of 45 people going in every 5 minutes. Then it is incredibly warm and humid. I did get some good pictures though. I can look at them while I'm at home in my air conditioned house and pretend that it was cooler. Oh, well.
We got back over to the Skyline Drive and finished it just east of Waynesboro, where we stayed at the Best Western. Okay...that was enough excitement for one day...unless I get bored I'll write more tomorrow.
